Course Overview

Taught by Dr. Lane G. Tipton, this course builds on the pioneering work of Geerhardus Vos and Meredith Kline to develop a biblical theology of heaven in light of the teaching of the book of Hebrews. Tracing the movement of redemptive history from Abraham’s hope of a heavenly city to the ascension of Christ and the consummation of all things, this course sets forth heaven as the original dwelling place of God and the archetype of earthly worship. Students will explore how the ascended Christ, as heavenly high priest and forerunner, brings his people into the true Sabbath rest and worship of Mount Zion. Along the way, Dr. Tipton addresses key implications for millennial views, the ministry of the word, the Lord’s Supper, and the church’s identity.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Explain how the book of Hebrews presents heaven as the primordial dwelling place of God and the archetype for worship on earth.
Trace the movement of redemptive history from Abraham, through the Exodus and Sinai, to its fulfillment in the ascension and priesthood of Christ.
Apply the heavenly theology of Hebrews to the church’s worship, preaching, and celebration of the Lord’s Supper as participation in the reality of the world to come.
Articulate how the church, as the Spirit-indwelt temple of God, participates in extending his joy-filled presence throughout the world.
