Course Overview

Write your awesome label here.
Taught by Dr. James J. Cassidy, this course offers a Christ-centered overview of the Gospel of John, especially suited for adult Sunday school and Bible study settings. It examines the key themes that shape John’s Gospel, with particular attention to its distinctive use of truth. In John, truth is more than the contrast between what is true and what is false; it is the revelation of the heavenly reality that has come down to earth in the Word made flesh.

Chapter by chapter, Dr. Cassidy sets forth Jesus as the true lamb, bread, light, shepherd, vine, and priest—the man from heaven in whom all the old covenant shadows and types find their fulfillment. By God’s grace, this course will serve John’s stated purpose: “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). And thereby, students are further equipped to grasp the centrality of Christ in all of Scripture and to share his gospel more clearly with others.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Understand the concept of "truth" as presented in the Gospel of John, particularly how it relates to the person of Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of Old Testament types and shadows.
Analyze the theological and historical context of the Gospel of John, considering its authorship, purpose, and the depiction of Jesus as the eternal Logos.
Evaluate the significance of John's portrayal of Jesus as the true light and life, and how this contrasts with other interpretations, such as those of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Apply John’s purpose statement in John 20:31 to their own devotional life, defense of the faith, and sharing of the gospel.
