Course Overview

Write your awesome label here.
This course is an exposition of the apostle Peter’s first letter to the suffering Christians scattered throughout Asia Minor. Rich in theology and practical in concrete wisdom, this epistle has been called “a condensed resume of the faith.” As such, it provides a fundamental orientation for Christian existence and Christian ethics. Peter sees the church as earthly sojourners with a heavenly inheritance and hope. Out of such a framework, he prescribes an “exilic ethic” of sober and comprehensive engagement with the world.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Understand the eschatological and heavenly orientation of Peter’s letter.
Apply Peter’s orientation to the moral theology of the Christian life he develops.
Contrast Peter’s perspective with contemporary Christian cultural and political reflection and engagement.

Evaluate Peter’s emphasis on the blessedness of suffering as a Christian in light of the letter’s overall perspective.
